“Wife Of A Salesman” Plays At Writers Theatre
The Writers Theatre’s production, “Wife of a Salesman”, a world premiere for playwright Eleanor Burgess, is well executed and extremely thought provoking. Things are not always as they appear. The show chronicles two very different females, both in love with the same man, or are they? This work is a must for fans of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman”. The serious drama has some comedic moments, and a very charming set. Props are spot on, as are the costumes. This period piece, set in the 1950s, has a turbulent surprise ending that speaks to the fact that there is nothing new under the sun. But before that, the strategic placement of an anachronism takes the play in a decidedly different direction with a very modern twist.
The three person production with its two women and one male cast has stellar characterizations; the actors are excellent. Rapport between the ladies, portrayed by Kate Fry and Amanda Drinkal, is amazing on more than one level. Rom Barkholder, the lone man in this production, does a marvelous job of breaking the fourth wall, and gives a very credible performance. A clear feminist message and some shocking revelations make for a very intense theatrical experience. Great acting, compelling dialog, and strong tension building give this theatrical work layers of depth. Stage hands appear with actual non-speaking roles, lending another interesting element to the story. Have times changed for women, or do we still face similar issues when it comes to equality? This play passes no judgment, while still exploring the challenges women face in society. This Jeff Recommended play must close April 3rd – for tickets or more information, please see their website at www.writerstheatre.org.
