We Love Oil Lamp Because…It Is A Wonderful Theater

Oil Lamp’s production of “I Love You Because…” is a delightful musical that explores the complexities of various relationships: dating, brotherhood, best friends, and co-workers are all chronicled in this high energy musical. Acting is strong, all six roles unique and well crafted by the talented cast, their comic timing excellent and dramatic moments sincere. We never see the character Catherine, yet she is expertly brought to life by the performers.

Director Scott Shallenbarger does a fabulous job of creating a realistic atmosphere on the stage. I especially love the very colorful set – hues of pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green give a upbeat, eclectic look perfect for depicting the vibe of New York City. Two red Oriental lanterns suspended from the ceiling are spot-on for the hilarious Chinese restaurant scenes. I really enjoyed the music – strong vocals are accompanied by a lone keyboardist at the back of the set, his excellent instrumentals adding to the melodic preeminence. Costumes are nicely done, believable and fashion forward.

Oil Lamp provides a lovely theater-going experience with a charming and comfortable lobby, complemented by the signature lighting fixtures and attractive art work. A full bar and delicious complimentary cookies complete the cozy ambiance of this captivating store front theater. Located in the quaint downtown area of Glenview, there is plenty of parking including a free valet at the restaurant next door. Audience members can choose from a number of eateries within walking distance, should you choose to enjoy dinner before the show.
