“Hail Mary/Maria” – A Filipino Coming of Age

| August 17, 2026

By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano

Nova Entertainment’s “Hail Mary/Maria” is a hilarious and touching play penned by RJ Silva, with the sensitivity of young, yearning, blooming love in uncharted waters of cultural customs and the like.

Directed by Adam Reed, it is a biographic story of a young shy Filipino student Kid, short actually for Kindness – as Kid, Juan Sedonio is spectacular. He adores watching videos on his laptop of a Filipino wrestler Maria (played by the vibrant dynamo Carina Lastimosa) – his classmate Jack (the outstanding Aidan Leake) strikes up a conversation, to which Kid awkwardly responds. He goes home to his mom’s home cooked meal – his mother is nurse Marie (the excellent Marie Tredway), who is boisterous and talkative, working night shifts.

“Hail Mary/Maria” highly recommended, but has a short run (closing August 22nd), so don’t be left out – for tickets, please see www.TheaterWit.org, or for more information go to www.the-novas.com/hail-marymaria.
