The finest in fun theatrical experience is “real near by” in Skokie – Musical Theater Works stellar production of Annie is innovative and energetic. The acting is quite good and vocals are strong; the orchestra top notch, full bodied and rich. The first act shows the darkness of the Great Depression with the use of actual 1933 newsreel footage in black and white; a genuine Jello ad made me smile. The set has a bit of comic strip look, appropriate for this show; curtains and shadows are utilized to full advantage. I especially like the steam arising from a pot cooking over a fire in Hooverville.

The second act is bright and colorful, chock full of optimism. A large American flag as the backdrop during that show stopping musical number “Tomorrow” is incredibly moving. The costumes are exceptionally well done; a large drape depicting a huge Christmas tree is used for a very inventive wardrobe change. I am extremely impressed with the cast – both the humor and drama are spot on. The dance sequences are full of vitality, including some excellent tap routines; radio show and White House sequences are very believable and era apropos.

It is a pleasure to see a stageful of very talented young ladies, each one unique and lovely. And this festive theater company’s holiday productions have featured very cute dogs two years running; who doesn’t love an adorable and well trained pup in the role of Sandy, Annie’s loveable mutt. This magnificent musical in highly entertaining and extremely appropriate for the entire family this holiday season. When life is full of hard knocks, theater lifts us up; Annie reminds us to never lose hope – the sun will come out tomorrow. Wear your biggest grin to this delightful presentation, because “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile”. “Annie” runs just to January 4th, so for tickets or more information, please see www.musictheaterworks.com
