Martha Graham Dance Doesn’t Show Its Age
By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano
For one night only, the Martha Graham Dance Company ably demonstrated their signature style at the Auditorium Theatre to a full house. Part of the “Celebrating Women Leaders in Dance” series, this celebrated the centennial anniversary milestone of the oldest dance company in America, with the unique, innovative, avant-garde aesthetic of their founding namesake who pioneered a dance revolution. Considered the mother of modern movement, Graham’s legacy is now curated by artistic director Janet Eilbert for the new generations into the future.
The minimalism of the Graham technique is major – the spine, emotion, breath; the movements are like sculptures. Angular expanding/contacting expressions – a movable feast of the eyes and soul; marvelous. The words these singular, seminal sequences inspire are succinctly sibilant: seamless, synergy, stylized, statuesque, spacial, serene, solemn, subtle, smooth, simple, strong, sleek, structured, snazzy, sensational, splendid, stellar.
