“Iraq, But Funny” Pleases Audience
By Cate Rees-Hessel with Flo Mano
Once again, Tony award winning Lookingglass Theatre brings us the very finest in thought-provoking entertainment, the world premiere of “Iraq, But Funny”. As a part-Iraqi woman, I can certainly appreciate the fast-paced dynamics of this wonderful play; a great comedy, with something for everyone.
Five generations of women dealing with their mothers and daughters, against the misunderstood ancient landscape of people in turmoil and the division of their country, bring this sharp satirical work to life. It begins with the Ottoman Empire, goes through British colonialism, to the U.S. involved period, the actresses telling their stories, interacting with the audience, while archived images and maps with changing borders are effectively projected in the background.
Beautifully written by Ensemble Member Atra Asdou, this semi-autobiographical production also has a stellar cast – Susaan Jamshidi, Gloria Imseih Petrelli, James Rana, Sina Pooresmaeil and Atra herself, artfully directed by Dalia Ashurina. The “British guy” narrative is unique and refreshing, like the show itself – a must for any theater goer that enjoys satire. Don’t miss your chance to be one of the family; get your tickets now because the Assyrian ladies leave the stage on July 20th – head on over to www.lookingglasstheatre.org.
