“The Lady From The Sea” Makes A Big Splash

By Anna Hessel

Court Theatre’s production of Lady from the Sea is a wonderful theatrical experience.  The set is exquisite: beautiful furnishings and props adorn the stage on a bed of white sand.  An actual water surf slowly makes its way across the front of the stage.  The stellar cast members utilize the water strikingly, giving the drama a realistic feel.

Henrik Ibsen has always been a favorite of mine, well ahead of his time.  He encourages women to make choices in romantic relationships; “Lady from the Sea” speaks this message clearly.  The costumes are simplistic but nicely done.  Humor lightens the serious nature of the play, while still getting the dramatic message across.

In the role of the Lady herself, Chaon Cross does an amazing job; her struggle is genuine and not over played.  Her feelings of inadequacy regarding her husband’s first wife and the mother of his daughters is clearly portrayed.  Gregory Linington plays her husband, the good doctor, with a calm authority, and gives a flawless performance.  Dexter Zollicoffer has excellent comic timing and clear stage presence.

The sisters, portrayed by Tanya Thai McBride and Angela Morris, are spot on with sibling rivalry and enthusiasm.  Will Mobley and Samuel Taylor are a pleasure to watch, articulate, with controlled moderation of strident energy.  Kelli Simpkins is statuesque and imposing, giving the character an ethereal quality.  Overall this production is excellent, and well worth the price of admission.  The tide goes out for the last time March 27th – for tickets or more information, visit their website at www.courttheatre.org.
