Relive “The Last Five Years”

Oil Lamp Theater’s production of “The Last Five Years” sheds some light on the progression (or in some elements, regression) in a longer-term relationship. They start with an  innovative set highlighted by a beautiful painted floor, and movable screen pieces which at times are backlit for shadowed segments by one of the two actors. This is coupled with great props such as a picnic basket, mini Christmas tree, and gift box containing a lovely watch, all used to great effect.

Costumes are another favorite part of the show. One nice, simple blue dress is made into several fashionable outfits by changing shoes and adding sweaters or jackets. My favorites were a pink and white sweater, black glitzy jacket, and denim jacket; we also love her “Showboat” sweatshirt. The (spoiler alert) wedding scene with a pretty white dress and shrug ensemble went from a picnic to the vows by adding a veil for her, an attractive suit and a yamaka cap for him. His T-shirt at the start of the play comes full circle, appearing again at the end.

All this creative setup supports the unusual timeline the show uses: his memories, which alternate with hers, run chronologically, but the female perspective starts at the end and unfolds in reverse. The plot, then, isn’t as much about what happened, but – intriguingly – when, why, and how.

This unique work packs five years into a one act musical with realistic believability delivered by excellent acting. Lili Galluzzo (Cathy) brings an palpable emotional intensity of the hurt which grew, scaling well in sync with her character’s reverse time frame. Abraham Deitz-Green (Jaime) gives a flawless performance with sharp comic timing. The last scene where he removes his wedding ring after closing their bank account is very dramatic and emotional. Both have the strong vocals called for in this party of two production.

Oil Lamp is a charming theater with a comfortable lobby, complete with delicious complimentary chocolate chip cookies and a full bar that includes a themed specialty drink. But both Cathy and Jaime’s timelines run out July 19th, so make a quick run to www.oillamptheater.org, and share in their bittersweet, funny trip down memory lane.
