“If Ever A Wiz There Was…”

By Wes Hessel with Fran Besyk

There is nothing like the classics, and certainly the stage version of “The Wizard of Oz” is one of them. Metropolis Performing Arts Centre gives us their marvelous production, which brings back so many childhood memories for the grownups, and starts new memories for the kids who go to see it.

The set design, casting, singing, and acting, not to mention the 13 piece orchestra are absolutely amazing. Nora Wragg has such an incredible voice that if you close your eyes, you would swear that Judy Garland is on stage performing. And Genevieve Thiers is marvelous in her role as the Wicked Witch.

To be honest, there isn’t one actor who isn’t pure perfection in their roles, many playing multiple parts. But Cali Spence – the adorable little dog who plays Toto – stole all our hearts every time he came on stage with tail wagging 100 mph. Just might be the best play/musical I’ve seen in a very long time. You don’t have to go over the rainbow, but follow the yellow brick road to www.metropolisarts.com for tickets or more information, but do so before the wizard takes off for Kansas on August 9th…
