“Girls & Boys” is Well Worth the Ride
By Flo Mano with Wes Hessel
Walking in the Griffin Theatre production of “Girls & Boys” by Brit Dennis Kelly, I was in awe of the set design by Sotirios Livaditis. A calm cream colored couch and end tables in a living room – my eyes were then drawn up to a suspended blue colored couch with an assortment of innuendo items of a lived-in space frozen in time. I was mesmerised and intrigued trying to decipher meaning to this strong introduction character before the play even began…
The production is a fascinating one-woman show of the principal casually going down the memory lane of her life as she is speaking to friends – Cynthia Marker is incredible in this 90-minute monologue which starts with meeting the love of her life, continues through having two children, and the gradual demise of the marriage with dire consequences. Ms. Marker uses a lot of British humor in this dark story of events, but it’s also a broad rollercoaster of emotional range. This tour de fierce is only in play until August 16th, so please make the trip to www.griffintheatre.com/chicago-productions for tickets or more information.
