Three Women “Talking About Godard” Unfiltered
By Wes Hessel with D’Arcy Mies
Curious Theatre Branch’s “Talking About Godard” is a very frank, ambling conversation by three roomates in their domicile, hubbing around the work of French/Swiss filmmaker Jean Luc Godard. The set itself is a living room, with overflowing ashtrays, knick-knacks, odds and ends, and lots of suitcases; the reason for the luggage is explained during the show. The production also has lots of 90’s references like their clothing and video rental stores.
It is funny, with some of the hilarity being very broad slapstick, and other humorous parts dry and acerbic wit. Lovers of Godard and film in general would find this uniquely satisfying, but even for those who don’t know Godard’s work, they would still find much of interest. Certainly we can all relate to having annoying roommates, unrequited love, and so on.
The performances are all quite good – I liked the “double lens” of knowing some of the actors played the same parts at a much younger age, and yet it still works well – maybe even better… They are not waiting for Godard, so you shouldn’t either, since this in-house discussion for mature audiences only runs until June 28th – see www.curioustheatrebranch.com for tickets or more information.
