Elvis Has Entered The Building At Marriott Theatre
By Cate Rees-Hessel with Wes Hessel
Marriott Theatre’s production of “Heartbreak Hotel” is a huge hit – the official Elvis Presley bio-musical is absolutely magnificent. The music is fabulous, with spectacular Broadway-worthy finales at the end of both acts. I especially loved the gospel numbers – the integration throughout of “Peace in the Valley” being the standout – and a very touching rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” that showcases Elvis the dad.
The entire cast is stellar; in the role of adult Elvis is the enormously talented Tyler Hanes – his characterization of the King of Rock and Roll is flawless. He embodies Elvis right down to simple mannerisms and movements, without straying into stereotype. Elizabeth Telford brings his mom to life with sincerity and realism. As father Vernon Presley, Karl Hamilton has excellent comic timing and is very believable. Jackson Evans is Sam Phillips, head of Sun Records – he plays his role perfectly, humorous and gritty, with razor sharp big line delivery. Rob Lindley never overplays the infamous Colonel Tom Parker – he is most credible.
Chicago favorite Leah Morrow handles varied characters with complete ease – she can play any part, no matter how diverse, and make it her own; a pleasure to watch. Melanie Brezill as Sister Rosetta Tharpe and others has a beautiful voice and is full of stage presence. In the roles of Ann-Margaret and Priscilla Presley are Alexandra Palkovic and Amanda Walker, very respectively – both women represent the ladies they portray beautifully.
Trevor Lindley Craft as Frank Sinatra and Naiqui Macabroad in the part of Reverend Brewster are both extremely real and delightful; Anna Louise Bramlett’s portrayal of Dixie is upbeat and vibrant. No review of this wonderful musical would be complete without shout-outs for Colton Sims and Charles Adler Bischoff (in his professional debut, no less) as teen and childhood Elvis, most respectively; these two young men give two of the finest performances I have seen onstage – they are exemplary.
I love the costumes – just enough glitz and glamour; the innovative use of lighting design and projections adds to the atmosphere of this high-energy production. Check into “Heartbreak Hotel” at the Marriott Theatre for a night of superb entertainment, but before Elvis leaves the building for the last time May 31st.
