ABT On Point By: Anna with Wes Hessel

The world-renowned New York-based ballet corps was in Chicago for three performances this past weekend, and it was, as one would expect, exceptional. The first number was both classic and innovative, athletic with beauty and grace – an amazing piece of covorting and exuberance, with pretty costumes, understated and elegant.

The second act contained two incredibly beautiful athletic pas de deux. The lead dance made a powerful positive statement, and the second segment had a touch of whimsey that was perfectly played out.

The third act was absolutely spectacular, with popular music by Tony Bennett, including a favored duet with Lady Gaga, and, of course, his signature San Fran song. Ensembles by Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera in both black and white, as well as bright colors of pink, blue, and yellow, were perfect for this high energy springtime in Manhattan piece. The backgrounds were stunning yet simple, some in bright hues, ranging from what reminded me of Charlie Brown’s shirt pattern, to a island of Manhattan complete with skyline. A black and white jazz club rendering added to the lovely backdrops.

The movement was spot-on fabulous, with acrobatic elements, making it a perfect show of exquisite graceful dance at Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. For tickets or more information for future events at the Auditorium, please go to their website at www.auditoriumtheatre.org.
