“Little Women” is a Big Success
Northlight Theatre’s very delightful production of the Louisa May Alcott classic “Little Women” is a perfect play for the holiday season. This semi-autobiographical work, beautifully written by a woman clearly ahead of her time, is brought to life on the stage with poignant drama and moments of whimsical humor. The set is absolutely charming; an almost doll house size replica of the home that is the residence of the spirited March sisters suspends from the ceiling. In the first act we see the furnishings underneath dust covers until they are revealed during very appropriate moments. The blue front door also serves up pertinent symbolism; a Christmas wreath adorns said door during apropos moments.
The acting is stellar – all five woman and two men bring each character to life with ease; I especially like how the judgmental aunt is portrayed. Unseen characters are referenced so well that you feel as if they are actually on the stage. Costumes are eclectic, both period and character appropriate. I love the relationship between the sisters and their mother – it makes me appreciate my siblings even more. This story of family and friendships gives the warm hearted performance an extra cozy feeling, much like being wrapped in an older, much loved shawl.
The book and film versions are well loved yuletide traditions – this very wonderful adaptation by Lauren Gunderson is now on my holiday favorites list, as I am sure it will be on yours. Don’t miss this wonderful literary work before the sisters march on January 5th (2025) – for tickets or more information, kindly go to www.northlight.org.
