“Figaro” In Mozart’s Great Classic Comic Opera

“The Marriage of Figaro” opened at the Lyric Opera to a full house – not a surprise, since it’s one of Mozart’s most popular operas. Under the eye of well-seasoned director Barbara Gaines (founder and former artistic director of Chicago Shakespeare Theater), it is a very energetic, comedic farce of love, betrayal, jealousy, and scheming, a colorful production revival from its premiere at the Lyric in the 2015-16 season. The stage design by James Noone is a majestic protagonist itself, front and center literally, as well as most functional. Susan Mickey’s costumes are intricate and vibrant, color-coordinating for each of the characters.

“Figaro” is conducted brightly by Erina Yashima, making her first appearance at the vaunted opera house. Peter Keller, in the title role for his Lyric debut, portrays the lovable rogue, and soprano Ying Fang is stellar as his agile, witty Susanna. Gordon Bintner’s Count Almaviva is commanding, with Federica Lombardi matching up as the forbearing Countess (both also debuting at the Lyric). Kayleigh Decker is quite convincing as the lovely Cherubino.

This sumptuous production is a feast for the senses, so start your holiday season early – celebrate “The Marriage of Figaro” at the Civic Opera House. But the invite expires November 30th – proceed with speed to www.lyricopera.org for tickets or more information.
