“Southern Rapture” Rose Above
By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano
Tin Drum Theater debuted the Chicago premiere of “Southern Rapture”, a satirical dramedy by Eric Coble, directed by Jason Palmer. The theater depicted in the play is dependent on public funding and the politics behind the production. Determined, idealistic artistic director Marjorie Winthrop, played by ShannonLeigh Webber, is trying to elevate human consciousness, while Mayor Paxton (Teddy Boone) is influenced by the fear of losing voters.
Board member Allissa Marquand was exquisitely performed by Mary Anne Bowman, who also played multiple roles including perfection as a tough district attorney. Andrew Bosworth was superb as Rev. Dupree and in other various roles. Jordan Gleaves as a “Nightline” host was amazing in all his personas, and Jenny Hoppes wore a lot of hats with distinct personalities to a “T”; Michael Stejskal brought comedic relief as the producer.
Costume designer Kasey Wolfgang delivered familiarity of the time period. The set design by Kaitlyn Hettinger was perfect in the theater and office spaces, cohesively with the lighting by Ellie Fey and sound designer Zach Stinnett’s work. This was a thought provoking play, balancing issues with humor in the hands of this talented troupe – highly recommend.
