Writers Theatre – A “Job” Well Done

By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano

Frantic tension sums up the play “Job”, written by Max Wolf Friedlich, and the directorial debut of David Esbjornon at Writers Theatre in this two character drama. Jane (Rae Grey) is a content moderator for a tech company – Loyd (Christopher Donahue) is a psychotherapist who she needs to sign off for her return to work after a screaming rant went viral. A cat and mouse psychological thriller with dark humor and power plays draws the audience in.

The intensity is highlighted by the incredible light design of James Ingalls, which penetrates like electrical shocks, triggering memory or other thoughts. The claustrophobic atmosphere is heightened by the compact, intimate stage design of Jack Magaw – we are right there in the therapist’s office. Jessica Pabst’s costumes are casual for both, yet amplify the generation gap. This complicated, intricate production is breathtaking while ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation. Both actors are impeccable, making “Job” highly recommended. How important is work, and how far will one go to keep it? Pursue these questions and more by June 14th when time runs out for this struggle of wills – see www.writerstheatre.org for tickets or further information.
