“Twelfth Night” in the Island Life…

Once again, Chicago Shakespeare brings us the very finest theatrical experience – their Caribbean-themed “Twelfth Night” is absolutely fabulous. The set is exquisite, as sand, wooden fencing, and palm trees transport the audience to the islands. The wicker sofa, chairs, chandeliers, as well as the beautifully lit arch upstage, are wonderful, too. I absolutely loved the storm effects, especially a delightful, lifelike rain effect combining a string “curtain” and great projection. The lighting is top notch, also, approximating realistic. I can’t say enough good things about the colorful and fun costumes. Olivia’s gowns and lovely jewelry, befitting a countess, are stunning, ranging fthrough black, lilac, orange, and my personal favorite, pink.

In the role of Olivia is the pretty and talented Christiana Clark – she gives her character a unique spin. Ronald L. Conner brings Toby to life with ease – he has a great deal of stage presence and is delightful to watch. Sir Andrew, played by Alex Goodrich, is lively, funny and spot on. Viola is portrayed splendidly by the perky Jaeda LaVonne – she brings a freshness to the stage with ease. Maria (Danielle Davis), Feste (Israel Erron Ford), Fabian (Shelby Lynn Bias), Orsino (Yao Dogbe), Curio (Roberto Mantica), Antonia (Adam Poss), and Sebastian (Justen Ross) all give very notable performances, both individually and collectively. I have had the pleasure of seeing many a fabulous Malvolio, however, Paul Oakley Stovall, making his Chicago Shakes debut, is the best onstage that I have witnessed. His comic timing is impeccable, and he executes exaggerated gestures with out indicating. Mr. Stovall is over the top hilarious but never over played, and his dramatic moments are also flawless.

This entire show is comedy and drama at its Shakespearean best. The actors break the fourth wall with no difficulty and much hilarity, interacting with the audience, drawing every one into the action. The music is upbeat and vocals are marvelous, including some very fitting pop songs. This must see production is prodigious, with a few fun anachronisms to keep the audience at the edge of their seats. The magic continues through December 3rd – for tickets or more information, please check out www.chicagoshakes.com.
