“The Steadfast Tin Soldier” Continues Onward in Stalwart Splendor. By: Wes Hessel
Looking GlassTheatre’s annual production of Mary Zimmerman’s adept adapation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen story strides on this year in virtual vision, streaming through December 27th. Recorded from performance last year, the great tale shines even more in the context of USA, 2020.
Once again, we enjoy the beloved narrative of the loyal, determined trooper (Alex Stein) finding his place in the world and pursuing love in the form of the ballerina (Kasey Foster). Challenged by disability (his missing leg), cunning competition, crazy kids, a feeding fish, and a blistering blaze, the stouthearted soldier surges single-mindedly toward his goals. Superbly supported by the rest of the cast – Joe Dempsey (Nursemaid), John Gregorio (Rat), and Anthony Irons (Goblin), this simply stunning staging is underscored by the integral instrumentals of Greg Hirte, Juan Horie, and Constance Volk, led lively and legato by music director Leandro López Várady.
This holiday treat should be on your tradition list for now and future years – you will never regret it. For tickets or more information, forward march to www.lookingglasstheatre.org
