Second City Christmas Delights Audiences

I admit I love a schmaltzy Christmas TV movie, full of small town hope and happy endings, so I knew I would love a parody of such films, and no one does spoof better than Second City. I loved their production of “Deck the Hallmark: A Greeting Card Channel Original”. It’s the story of career-minded Holly Winterberry, the girl who can sell anything, played by the very talented and pretty Karla Serrato, with her two best friends by her side and her cardboard cutout boyfriend, as she appears to thrive in the big city.
Of course, Holly is sent to her hometown on business that can destroy the little burgh. She must stop the evil mayor and her awful beau from causing the destruction of the place where she grew up. Ms. Winterberry has to save her parents’ wine store along with the rest of the tiny village within a limited amount of time and, of course, she falls in love with a local down home guy.
Second City’s version of this tale is hysterical, filled with adult humor and just the right amount of schmaltz. The rest of the cast – Tina Arfaee, Mitchell Fain, Sarah Lo, T.J. Thomas, Morgan Van Dyne, and Carisa Barreca – are phenomenal as well, with flawless comic timing, impeccable improvisation, and a bevy of spot-on characterizations. The vocals are also hilarious, led by the able artistry of music director Lisa McQueen. Santa makes a unique surprise appearance, and there is even a sing-along. Audience participation is done safely and makes for even more fun. The set is charming, complete with virtual fireplaces, on-screen trivia questions, and quaint village scene projections.
The two hour production is more than a play, it’s a delightful holiday experience. Very yummy appetizers and desserts are available for purchase, the drink menu extensive, and the service excellent. The staff is very welcoming, and the atmosphere is charged with energy and excitement. There is even a backdrop in the lobby with a selection of accessories and props to take selfies after the show. If you are looking for a fun-filled night to enjoy this Christmas season, look no further than Second City. “Deck the Hallmark: A Greeting Card Channel Original” runs now through January 2nd; for tickets or more information, see their website at www.secondcity.com.
