Riveting “’night Mother” Not for the Faint of Heart
By Wes Hessel with Flo Mano
The Redtwist production of the intense play “’night Mother” portrays the broken relationship of a controlling mother and the daughter who now lives with her. Jessie (the daughter) has been sorting through things and finds her dad’s old gun. Years of hurt and resentment, loveless marriages for both, the disappointment of Jessie’s son, and more are rehashed. The daughter goes through steps of preparing, but will she go through with it?
Kathy Ruhl as mother Thelma and Anne Sheridan Smith’s characterization of Jessie are hauntingly heart wrenching and transcendent. The audience are like flies on the wall front and center, immersed in this intimate space designed by Bobbie Buie. This play is raw and real, for people who like to delve in the psyche of family dynamics, but not for the faint hearted. Exquisitely directed by Redtwist Theatre Executive Artistic Director Dusty Brown, “’night Mother” is highly recommended. The show only runs until May 24th, so please go to www.redtwisttheatre.org for tickets or more information.
