Party Like It’s 1985 With “The Wedding Singer”
By Cate Rees-Hessel & Fran Besyk
“The Wedding Singer” at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is a musical full of belly laughs; the score is absolutely fabulous, complete with a lively seventeen piece orchestra, and the dancing is so incredibly amazing that we wondered how they could still sing so beautifully while moving with such energy and enthusiasm. Just like the film in 1998 which inspired the show, it is really easy to get lost in the well-written storyline.
This production has all the marks of a incredibly good show, with impeccable comic timing and very well staged production numbers. Vocals are extremely strong, the acting realistic and believable – the entire cast is truly brilliant. Each scene is well executed, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats awaiting the next entertaining moment.
Costumes are nicely done and the set is quite charming with a touch of whimsy. As an added treat to this sublime play, there is a “rapping” grandma brilliantly played by the very talented Caron Buinis. You can’t help but smile and laugh through the entire production – this theatrical work highlights the professional excellence we have come to expect from Metropolis. For tickets or more information, please join the party at www.metropolisarts.com, but don’t miss the wedding of the year before they leave for the honeymoon May 24th.
