Paramount Theatre’s magnificent production of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” is extremely well done. The sets are classic and understated, the costumes charmingly period appropriate, and the acting is fabulous – the entire cast is outstanding. In the title role is the lovely Tiffany Topol – her voice is melodic and powerful.  She brings so much life to the character, it was hard to remember that the actual Carole King was not the one onstage. One particular monologue where she stands up to her problematic spouse was exceptionally compelling.

C.J. Blaine Eldred plays her husband and writing partner Gerry Goffin with realistic aplomb, giving the role layers of depth – you still dislike the man he portrays, but there are moments where his character draws audience empathy thanks to his well-crafted characterization. Best friends and fellow song writing team Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann (Rebecca Hurd and Christopher Kale Jones, respectively) give very credible performances, with impeccable comic timing. Carole’s mom (Laura T. Fisher) is funny, the quintessential put upon parent; her dramatic moments however are moving and well played. Ian Paul Custer, as the crusty Donny Kirshner, gives a flawless performance, loveable and caring underneath his gruff exterior.

The vocals and musical numbers are lively and well executed. This high energy production tells the poignant story of the legendary singer/songwriter with honesty and humor. The show begins and ends with Ms. King’s iconic Carnegie Hall concert. The memories and the music are “Beautiful”; before “It’s Too Late” June 16th, go see this melodic masterpiece.
