“Incognito” Explores the Mind
By Flo Mano with Wes Hessel
The Tin Drum Theater company presents the Chicago premiere of “Incognito” by Nick Payne. Four actors exquisitely play four to six interchangeable roles within this surreal, complex play. Teddy Boone is a psychiatrist that steals Albert Einstein’s brain for research. Riles August Holiday stands out as Henry, a patient who has lost his memory, as well as for the multiple characters with his changing posture, facial expressions, and accents. Shannon Leigh Webber characterizes a neuropsychologist venturing into a relationship with Patricia, portrayed by the talented Erin Alys.
Director Jason Palmer weaves seamless distinct scenes within time and space in this nonlinear play. The minimalist scenic design by Marcus Kline, and the creativity of Jack Goodman’s lighting, especially the suspended figure sculpture, pulsating to the sound effects by Alex Kingsley, is very cohesive teamwork. I am fascinated by the nuanced genius of the actors not only memorizing their lines, but transitioning to their respective identities in pursuit of the elusive knowledge – quest fulfilled! This is a highly recommended play to see, in my opinion, to explore the enigma of our gray matter. “Incognito” fades into the shadows August 3rd, so please go to www.tindrumtheatre.com for tickets or more information.
