Fireflies
“Fireflies” Glows With Inner Light
By Anna Hessel
Northlight Theatre’s production of Fireflies is a well executed, extremely intense drama. Chanell Bell and Al’Jaleel McGhee give flawless performances, with an exemplary chemistry that runs throughout the entire show. The productionas is high energy and packed with emotion. In this powerful play we are reminded that God uses sinners to make a difference in a pathetic and chaotic world; even those who possess faith in the Almighty have their own demons to face, and often do so with human crutches. Frequently when faced with horrific atrocities, like the burning of black churches and the senseless death of innocent children, one’s perspective can become paralyzed. Those who suffered and even paid the ultimate price for civil rights must never be forgotten, for their burden was heavy and lonesome.
The women in the movement could be misunderstood even by those who loved them – what defines ladylike is perhaps misconstrued. It is hard to stay in the background when your spirit longs to be front and center. Tragedy and loss can be overcome with faith but it’s not ever easy. The tumultuous times tore at the very souls of those striving to overcome severe obstacles in search of a better world.
Hope brings the mountain yet to climb. We are all fireflies: our inner lights can be snuffed out but the fire still burns within to see a change for the better. Love will climb that mountain with a miraculous hope. There are angels among us mortals when we need a Godly touch. Once again, Northlight gives the audience a wonderful set, inviting as any kitchen in the year 1963, and synchronous use of lighting and sound adds a perfect element to this amazing theatrical work.
