“Emmet Otter” is Utterly Wonderful

The Muppets are in Chicago for the holiday season at the lovely Studebaker Theater – “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas” is on the marqee. Join Doc Bullfrog, Stinky Skunk, Penelope Possum, and a host of other adorable characters as Emmet and his mother participate in Waterville’s first ever annual talent show, which takes the stage with hysterical results.

The puppetry in this magnificent production is spot on and delightful – five-time Emmy winner Anney Ozar handles “old” Penelope with precise ease, right down to a very possum-like hiss. The human cast is absolutely fabulous, including Chicago favorite Sawyer Smith as the spirited squirrel, whose Muppet children are both spunky and chirpy. Mrs. Mink (Sharriese Hamilton), of the Musical Emporium, gives a fabulously revealing performance that had the audience in stitches.

Mayor and Mrs. Fox are brilliantly brought to life by Kevin Covert and Emily Rohm, respectively. As the talent show MC, Mr. Covert is hilarious, with a delightfully dry, droll sense of humour. Emmet and his Ma, played by Andy Mientus and Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone, are extremely talented and believable. The members of Emmet’s Jug-Band and the ensemble of the Riverbottom Nightmare Band are absolutely priceless.

Of course, the musical score by Paul Williams is simply beautiful, well sung, and orchestrated. The cute set is totally charming with appropriate touches of whimsy – even the chimney on the Otters house has smoke coiling from it. No review of this theatrical work would be complete without the mention of the costumes and make-up, which help to create the essence of these captivating characters. This show is ideal for all ages and a perfect addition to the holiday season. Don’t miss the magic of the Muppets, now through December 31st – for tickets or more information, go to www.fineartsbuilding.com/events/emmet-otter/.
