Chicago Shakespeare Excels with “Richard III”By Cate Rees-Hessel

Just when you think that Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier couldn’t produce an even better show, they do just that, with an exemplary production of “Richard III”. The deeply emotional show is theater at its finest; this amazing institution takes Shakespearean classics and infuses them with innovative new life – “Richard” is certainly no exception.

In the title role is a beautiful woman – certainly an interesting take for a work of the Bard. But this is no ordinary female – Tony nominated Katy Sullivan is a energetic powerhouse, and her interpretation is flawless. Ms. Sullivan, a respected Paralympic athlete with four titles of U.S. champion and an American speed record in the 100 meter race, moves about the stage with authority and grace. Her king is ruthless, deeply disturbed, and very human. Despite the heavy drama, comedic moments are well defined with impeccable comic timing; Katy is an absolute pleasure to watch – her characterization is spot on. As a woman with “invisible” disabilities, I found Ms. Sullivan’s performance to be empowering and extremely memorable; I left the theater knowing that I had witnessed theatrical genius.

The entire cast is absolutely phenomenal. Costumes are very well done – full face coverings on many ensemble members add to the eeriness of the play, as well as a pre-curtain breaking of the fourth wall, with a promise of the spookiness yet to come. Use of puppetry is beautifully executed, and lighting gives a perfectly spectral element – other worldly and spine chilling; music is dark and brooding, adding to the drama. The overall effect is rather hair-raising and ominous, drawing the audience in – this is an edge of your seat experience.

“Richard III” is a theater goer’s must see…a true masterpiece: unique, classic, and simply stunning. It is definitely for mature audiences – some elements may well be disturbing for children. Go now to witness this no-holds-barred, visceral production, but you only have until March 3rd, so see their website at www.chicagoshakes.com for tickets or more information.
