The Harris Theater at Grant Park was home to “Aretha Rising”, the Chicago Philharmonic’s salute to the legend Aretha Franklin. Ms Franklin, who won a Grammy for her gospel album “Amazing Grace”, which includes a beautiful rendition of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, was given a very fitting tribute. The Aretha arrangement of “Amazing Grace” was stellar and concluded the concert.
Her songs “Say a Little Prayer For You”, “Respect”, and “Think” were expertly performed. In addition to honoring the Queen of Soul, the evening paid homage to other African-American musical artists, as well. Maestro Scott Speck directed the magnificent Philharmonic orchestra with infectious and jovial enthusiasm; his warmth lit the entire theater, engaging the audience with his passion and zeal.
Costumes for the featured female vocalist Capathia Jenkins consisted of formal sequin gowns for the lady, and glittering blazers for the male soloist Darryl Williams. A dance party erupted during the encore, complete with a disco ball, and the audience was invited to stand up and groove to the fabulous music. Philharmonic Executive Director Terrel Johnson also shared information and a video about the stellar summer 2022 season; for further information please visit www.chicagophilharmonic.org.
