American Blues Opens New Theater With an Old Favorite
By Anna Hessel
American Blues Theater opens their brand new facility with the annual classic of “It’s a Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago!”; this 1940’s era radio broadcast simulation has become an area holiday tradition. In fact, at twenty years-plus, it’s the the second longest-running holiday play in the Windy City. The permanent location is a lovely venue, fresh and comfortable with wonderful seating and acoustics. The bar and lobby areas are great for enjoying a drink before the show.
Needless to say the production of “It’s A Wonderful Life”, with its stellar cast and a fun preshow featuring Christmas and Chanukah favorites, continues to be very enjoyable. The ensemble members have excellent comic timing, great distinct multiple voices to cover all the characters, and beautiful vocals. I love the audience interaction in this intimate setting, which makes for an amazing theatre experience.
As we have come to expect of this most professional theater company, the costumes are spot-on, and the set has a charming vintage vibe with a festive feel in the air. Help Clarence get his wings with the ring of a bell by attending a performance of this enchanting play, but make sure it’s before the “On Air” sign goes out for the last time this season December 31st.
