“Always” Shines with Empowerment

Drury Lane’s “Always…Patsy Cline” is one of the best productions I have ever seen. The rapport between the two women is heartfelt and sincere; this story is beautiful, the sisterhood between the ladies is empowering. They hit it off straight away, a fan becoming a true friend and penpal. The relationship between Patsy and Louise reminds me of my own decades long friendship with a legendary TV actress.

The show’s acting is top notch – both Aja Alcazar as Patsy Cline and Bri Sudia as Louise Seger give perfect performances. These two enormously talented actresses are Chicago favorites and for good reason, they excel at their craft. Vocals are incredibly strong, and the onstage band is fabulous – I felt like I was at the Grand Old Opry.

Once again, Drury Lane pulls out all of the stops – the costumes are beautiful, complete with signature Patsy Cline white cowgirl boots. I loved the charming set, a true honky tonk complete with strings of colorful lights out over the audience and patriotic lights on stage. Spotlights on the band members when they were introduced and played their solos were nicely done; a disco ball during the second act adds exquisite illumination.

“Always…” is well written and directed, as we have come to expect of Drury Lane’s very professional productions. Audiences will love the constant string of beautiful Patsy hits and the banter between the two women. Although we never see certain characters onstage, the two actors bring the unseen roles to life with believability – I could easily see the radio station DJ in my mind’s eye.

I simply love absolutely everything about this show. It’s a must see for anyone, not just country and western fans. Ms. Cline’s crossover to popular music is well showcased, as is her untimely death, but the play does not dwell on the sadness – it ends on a very upbeat note. Friendship, fun, and music are what this show is about. Motherhood is front and center, single parenting is not easy, marriage can be challenging, but women are strong, we do persevere; I am a firm believer in sisterhood.

This musical is a concert, a great story, and magnificent night of entertainment all rolled into one. She signed her letters to Louise, “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline”, and was a woman of faith. I could sense the immortal Ms. Cline’s spirit shining down from heaven; this theatrical work touched my heart in so many ways, as I know it will touch anyone that sees it. I dedicate this review in loving memory to my Patsy Cline, Loretta “Lorette” Swit, a dear friend. For tickets or more information, please visit www.drurylanetheatre.com.
