Paramount Theatre’s “…Enchanted Evening”

Paramount Theatre’s “South Pacific” is the finest production of this classic musical that I have seen to date. The sets are absolutely wonderful; a tropical paradise that is lovely – even the orchestra pit is fenced in bamboo. A large propeller is brought on to the stage at one point as part of a laundry, and running water showers for the ever popular show stopper. White fog and sheer curtains add to the ambiance in other scenes. Excellently executed projections show birds in flight, the almost mythical “Bali Ha’i”, and giant maps on slides depicting the military operations that are key to the story line.

The lighting and sound designs are well crafted, costumes charming and appropriate, particularly Nellie’s pink formal gown and capelet ensemble. I have always loved the message and the music of this play, and Paramount doesn’t disappoint. Vocals are sublime, with operatic quality singing – “Younger than Springtime” and “Some Enchanted Evening” are especially beautiful. Dance numbers are energetic and expertly choreographed, the acting top notch with believable and consistent accents. The entire cast is attractive and fabulous, including the talented children.

I especially enjoyed the fun Thanksgiving Follies portion of the show. The dramatic moments are superb but not overplayed, and humor throughout is impeccably timed – the reprise of “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” is especially funny. It’s a longer show but never boring, the duration completely entertaining. I have always loved the message and the music of this play, and Paramount doesn’t disappoint. Once again Aurora’s theater royale pulls out all the stops to bring a Broadway quality theatrical experience to the stage. Souvenirs and delicious show-themed specialty drinks are available in the lobby. To experience your own “…Enchanted Evening”, journey to www.paramountaurora.com, but do so by June 14th, when “Bali Ha’i” fades into the mists for the last time.

World War II nurses entertain the troops with an amateur song and dance number in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, the 2025-26 Broadway Series finale at downtown Aurora’s Paramount Theatre. Arguably the most romantic musical of all time, South Pacific is set in a World War II tropical paradise with warm sea breezes, breathless sunsets and B-29 Bombers. Performances run through June 14, 2026. For tickets, visit ParamountAurora.com or call (630) 896-6666. Photo credit: Boris Martin
