“42 Balloons” Rise to the Top
By Cate Rees-Hessel
Balloons are a marvelous way to start the summer season, so how about 42 of them? Chicago Shakespeare’s stellar production of “42 Balloons” is a very high energy tale that tells the poignant true story of “Lawn Chair Larry” and his dream of piloting into the air. This musical honors his memory with a heart touching rendition of his life.
Larry realizes his dream with the help of his video taking buddy Ron, his devoted girlfriend Carol and her mom Margaret. Emotions run high when people treat Larry with disrespect; he even has a guest spot on Letterman with hurtful results. We see the cruel actions of others, all wanting a piece of this unpretentious human being. A very well played out scene with Larry and the recruiter for National Park Service volunteers really resonates with a simple sincerity – finally someone other than his loved ones shows Larry respect and admiration. Larry won’t live to know the impact he had on a young boy’s life who witnessed his flight, making for a very moving moment in the second act.
The costumes are bright and well done; I was very impressed with the colorful use of lighting, illuminating and artistic. The entire cast is splendid and very realistic. Vocals are strong, and the on-stage musicians are fabulous. Although I would have loved to have seen the use of more balloons on stage and out over the audience, the theater and lobby have beautiful white displays throughout. Theatergoers can even take photos in a larger size replica of the pricey Sears chair that launches Larry into the sky. As always, Chicago Shakespeare brings innovation and excellence to the stage with this entertaining and tender production. Catch a ride with Larry before he loses too much helium to keep him aloft June 29th – fly on over to www.chicagoshakes.com for tickets or more information.
