It’s “Artrageous”…
By Nick Nicholas with Wes Hessel
The “Artrageous” show at The Center for the Performing Arts at Governors State University (GSU) was a high energy, immersive theatre production, a colorful and most entertaining blend of live painting, music, singing, dancing, comedy, and audience interaction. The painter artists are collaborating with the live music band, working to complete a well-known huge size painting such as the Mona Lisa, or Starry Night, in the amount of time it takes to do the songs. It’s a rush to the finish – every note is taken up with creating a masterpiece.
The very talented band of musicians who can just about do it all in performance. Lauri – the primary painter, and very talented MC get an audience member to come onstage and share the spotlight. The spectators respond and are transformed by the magic of performance into stars themselves on stage and in the aisles, singing and dancing along. The show achieves very well this connection between what is going on stage with its audience, especially the young to preteen children. Jarvis, the lead singer, is spectacular as he uplifts the audience with his powerful vocals.
An “Artrageous” performance is a great family outing, especially if you have young children at home and are looking to expose them to what a multifaceted and multi-talented live art music performance is able to do, encouraging audience participation, highlighting several art genres of music, dance, puppetry, storytelling, and speed-painted visual art – all of it in 90 minutes. It’s an accomplishment. For more on “Artrageous” and shows in the area, go to www.artrageousshow.com.
