The Royal Shakespeare Company, direct from London, is performing in the Windy City for the first time in thirty years and it is truly a theater experience not to be missed. Though it is a lesser-known work of the Bard, it is one which is extremely relevant to his artistic genius. Chicago Shakespeare’s joint production of “Pericles” is absolutely spectacular. The cast is stellar, the acting superb, with impeccable comic timing and heart touching drama. The scene in the second act where the title character is reunited with his grown daughter, who he had left in the care of Governor Cleon and his spouse Dionyza when she was an infant, is so emotionally moving that the audience burst into spontaneous applause.

This entire play had me on the edge of my seat, awaiting the next moment – it is extremely riveting. The actors break the fourth wall with practiced ease, using the aisles to enter and exit the stage; there is even a brief audience interaction which is extremely hilarious. I loved the props (particularly the varied use of rope and cords), music, and eclectically appropriate costumes, especially the headpieces and face veils.

A scene in the first act, depicting knights that are vying for the affection of the princess is very well choreographed and also quite entertaining. Stage movement in this show is magnificent and very fluid; I was extremely impressed with the mannequin like stop-motion poses. The set is stunning in its simplicity; Aztec-like prints, colorful rug, and pillows add to the staging charm. The lighting is very well done, and sound is spot-on.

I have come to expect theatrical excellence from Chicago Shakespeare, and I am never disappointed. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this well-directed and engrossing work of art – what a perfect production to close out the year. The epic of “Pericles” comes to an end December 7th – in the new year, many more stupendous theatrical events will be mounted by one of the best companies in the world for the Bard’s (and other) works; for tickets or more information, please visit www.chicagoshakes.com.
