“Reflections: Voices of the Underrepresented” Represents
By Wes Hessel
In an office building at 11 E. Adams St., on the east edge of the Loop is a hidden gem – a cozy, intimate concert venue likely unheard of by many. In its fifth year, Guarneri Hall seats 60 at most, and yet speaks volumes in the performances held within. The recital we “took in”, as they say, offered the opportunity to see up close the work of a great vocalist and pianist together in perfect harmony.
Mezzo-soprano extraordinaire Chrystal E. Williams and keyboard artiste Natalia Kazaryan combined on four art song pieces to highlight an extensive body of works which primarily are not performed often – those composed by women and members of other underrepresented groups. Compositions such as the ones offered demonstrate the gifted abilities of ones who may well not get the exposure and recognition deserved because they are not classic names such as Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, or Dvorak.
The considerable talent shared by the two ladies performing meshed masterfully in magnificent music: Ms. Kazaryan’s playing is nimble, while still passionate, deep and complex. Ms. Williams soaring operatic vocal sound and wide range would reach the back of the highest balcony in a hall such as the Lyric without any loss of quality, yet she does not overpower the snug surroundings of a small salon.
Such concerts are that which Guarneri is for – up close and personal, literally. To experience this, please see their website at www.guarnerihall.org to learn of future events and for tickets.
