Look for Something “Next to Normal” By Anna Hessel

| August 8, 2023

Copley Theatre’s production of the musical “Next to Normal” is a stellar opening to what promises to be another amazing season of thought provoking and edgy theater. This show handles the subject of mental illness and loss beautifully. It’s very intense, but the excellent vocals and music lighten the mood at times, as does the well placed humorous moments.

The cast is superb, beginning with Donna Louden, who plays a mom who really can’t cope with candor and vulnerability, believable with an inner strength that gives her character depth. Her teenage daughter is portrayed by the pretty Angel Alzeidan; she plays the put out girl with ease, allowing her impuissance to show through. Her love of music is an escape as she strives to live next to normal.

The teen boyfriend (Jake DiMaggio Lopez) is seemingly typical but with layers of insight and a strong sense of loyalty. In the roles of the doctors is Devin DeSantis; his characters’ humanity and concern for the patient is refreshing, yet a bit off putting. Mr. DeSantis gives a very capable performance. The husband trying to keep his family together is brilliantly brought to life by Barry DeBois; he is extremely talented and versatile, making one laugh, cry and think. I can’t say enough good things about the actor playing the family’s son; Jake Ziman delivers a flawless and powerful portrayal. Loaded with stage presence, his voice is robust, and his characterization is spot on. The minimalist dark set and exquisite lighting give amazing ambiance to the play. The costumes are very well done, as are the props. This theatrical work is a must see for any theater lover. “Next to Normal” runs through September 3rd – for tickets or more information, please see their website at www.paramountaurora.com/series
