“Dreamer” Brings Message of Hope

By Anna Hessel

Ballet 5:8’s student production of the world premier, family friendly, “Dreamer” was certainly a blessing to anyone who watched it. This story of hope is a balm for weary souls in trying times- no matter what obstacles we face, God is in control to guide us along life’s stumbling blocks. Two of my favorite Bible verses, Isaiah 54:17 and Jeremiah 29:11, teach us that no weapon formed against us shall prosper, and that the Lord has plans in place for us. This theatrical work reinforces this message of courage in all circumstances.

“Dreamer” is the Biblical story of Joseph, our favorite Old Testament visionary, whose story has been staged countless times and which lends itself well to a ballet, especially when the production is well executed and beautifully staged. Ballet 5:8 did a masterful job on this uplifting story. The costumes were well done and creative, and the set was exquisite. Projection backdrops were well integrated, especially during the Egyptian numbers.

My favorite was a black cat, with younger students in the role of felines. Children are such a delight on any stage, especially when they are playing an animal of any variety. Two tiny lambs were completely adorable, and we saw more of God’s creatures and creations, including frogs and wolves along with little girls being “flowers”; all were so enchanting. Each child in this ballet was enthusiastic and endearing, these mini dancers were a pleasure to watch.

Each solo and pas de duex brought unique talent to the show. Group numbers were full of energy, verve, and passion. A traditionally male role danced by women is no easy task, but these pupils did it with aplomb. All the principal roles including those of Joseph, Leah, Rachel, Pharaoh, Potiphar’s wife, and Jacob each brought unique style to the show.

The wide variety of music was delightful, traditional yet extraordinary. This entire unparalleled production was innovative, refreshing, and artistic. I highly recommend this entertaining and edifying dance company to all. For more information, please visit www.ballet58.org.
