Alvin Ailey will Rock Your Soul

By Anna Hessel

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater troupe performs a limited number of shows at the Auditorium Theatre; they are shows for the entire family, with something for everyone.  Their stellar moves are the star of the show, with an enormously talented cast.  Dancers from across the globe comprise the company, ranging from Chicago, Pittsburgh, Indiana, New York, the Carolinas, and abroad, to name a few.   Stylized precision dance and synchronized choreography, synonymous with the excellence of Alvin Ailey, creates a magical performance.  The athletic and artististic talent of each performer clearly shines through.  They are a truly gracious cast, acknowledging the thunderous applause with grace and humility.  A minimalist set and understated costumes add to the pure elegance of this troupe.

There are three different shows being performed, through March 6th.  Opening night we saw the “Robert Battle 10th Anniversary Program”, a showcase of athleticism and variety.  The first act featured a fun number, costumed in sequin trimmed black tuxedo wear; it was an audience favorite.  Another price useda spotlight projection of an American Flag.  A clear message of strength in unity was prevalent throughout the entire production.  A showstopper featured a round sunshine backdrop, with colorful red, orange, and yellow jumpsuit costumes.  The remaining performance dates will feature two other programs,”Celebrating Alvin Ailey” and “Lazarus”, as well as a repeat of the Battle anniversary set Saturday night.

Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 pm: “Celebrating Alvin Ailey”

Friday, March 4, at 7:30 pm: “Lazarus”

Saturday, March 5, at 2:00 pm: “Celebrating Alvin Ailey”

Saturday, March 5, at 8:00 pm: “Robert Battle 10th Anniversary”

Sunday, March 6, at 3:00 pm: “Lazarus”

The third magnificent act “Revelations”, which was originally choreographed by Alvin Ailey himself back in 1960, is featured as the close to all six shows.  This segment is by far one of the best dance pieces I have ever seen performed on stage.  It includes a toe tapping gospel number, which is wonderfully spirited.  The audience left the theater blessed, singing the featured spiritual classic, “Rocka my Soul in the Bosom of Abraham”.  Charming costumes, complete with hats, step stools, and a pretty parasol add a touch of whimsy to this upbeat number.   Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is not to be missed – it’s a wonderful movement experience.  For tickets or more information on this and other Auditorium Theatre events please visit www.auditoriumtheatre.org.
