It’s Absolutely Wonderful

By Anna Hessel

The twentieth anniversary edition of American Blues Theater’s “It’s a Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago” is absolutely wonderful.  A different venue and a few cast changes have been made from previous years but all of the talent and holiday fun we have come to expect from this seasonal classic is there.  Last season, American Blues Theater did a virtual production, which was brilliant in itself, but it is a pleasure to be able to celebrate the production’s two decade history live and in person.

The set is very charming as are the costumes; vocals are spot on and the actors are extremely gifted.  This production is ideal, not only for lovers of the classic film, but anyone that enjoys an uplifting and jovial holiday play.  You will be transported to Bedford Falls; join Clarence, George Bailey, his family and neighbors on this magical journey.  Pre-show Christmas music before the actual drama begins, including a barbershop rendition of a winter favorite and an audience sing along, sets the stage for the “radio” production.  Audience members have a chance to win prizes by identifying holiday songs, adding to the intimate atmosphere created by the stellar cast.  The entire feeling in the theater is festive and cozy.

I felt as if I was watching a radio show being performed live in the days before television, the action is so realistic and genuine.  This charming experience runs through December 31st at the beautiful Victory Garden Theater; for tickets or more information see their website at www.americanbluestheater.com.
