Will The Circle Be Unbroken?

Redtwist Theater opens its 22nd season with the world premiere of Erik Gernand’s dark comedy “Prayer Circle”. Upon entering the narrow space I was awed by the illuminated kaleidoscope stained glass cross – felt like I was entering an actual church; kudos to scenic designer Jeff Brain.

The show begins with the entrance of Doug (Kezia Waters); pensive, he sits at the piano and chants a solo intonation – his voice strikes straight to the heart. Doug is followed by a girl Addy (Andi Muriel), shabby but with attitude, who has what turns out to be a hidden gift. They are joined by the arrogant Marilyn (Jaqueline Grandt) and amenable stoic Carol (Macaria Chaparro Martinez). They are meeting for their prayer circle; there’s tension, underlying feelings, and comedy relief.

They’re waiting for the Pastor (Phillip C. Matthews), a devout but distraught man whose wife has passed, and now he takes care of their 2 children. He was invited to come pray with the group in his spouse’s spot. They need to be five at a particular span of time for a prayer to be answered…

I was so immersed viscerally, every nerve of my body electrified. Playwright Erik Gernand is masterful, the dialog exquisite. Every member of the ensemble is at the top of their game, creating a beautifully cohesive performance, a credit to the artistic eye of director Dusty Brown. A must see, but this circle has only until November 8th to complete its work, so please open your hearts and proceed to www.redtwisttheatre.org for tickets or more information.
