“The Heart Sellers” is Heartfelt

“The Heart Sellers” at Northlight Theater absolutely stole my heart – it is thoroughly delightful and empowering. This poignant comedic drama is set in the 70’s, with a realistic set and costumes, including two matching winter coats from Kmart. The play is a two woman one act featuring a pair of very talented actresses that have amazing rapport.

Mentions of Watergate and clips of Nixon on the radio claiming his honesty set the stage for dramatic moments, elucidating memories from back home for these beautiful ladies that are new to America. The wives of medical residents, who on a whim decide to spend Thanksgiving together while their spouses are on duty, share a very frozen turkey, sweet potatoes wrapped in foil and dish towels, and aerosol cheese on Ritz crackers.

The comic timing is impeccable – a trip to Disneyland, Julia Child, and the exact time of Soul Train all provide laughs as the ladies partake of alcoholic beverages and change into “home clothes”, while the bird roasts in the oven. The progression of this new found friendship, which began at the grocery store, is beautifully played out – it blossoms and builds most credibly throughout the show. Music festivals, company picnics, and maybe a disco to dance the night away hold the interest of these two fabulous females. The sisterhood is real as the budding besties’ relationship unfolds, and loneliness begins to evaporate.

The show begins with Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World” playing and ends with some “very fine wine”. Don’t miss this excellent theatrical work – open yourself to “The Heart Sellers” before this retro Thanksgiving comes to a close February 23rd.
