Just when you think Black Ensemble Theater can’t top their last fabulous production, they do just that – “You Can’t Fake The Funk” is absolutely spectacular. This remake of the 2019 show is brilliantly written and directed by BET artistic director Darryl Brooks, whose creative genius continues to show in this high energy musical extravaganza. The set is truly amazing, a spaceship that takes the audience out of this world, and back to Earth with a flourish, while integrating the band even more than usual. Photo projections and just enough bling grace the stage, with the use of theatrical haze bringing the talented cast out of the spacecraft, and again along the way in the show. I also love the use of lighting: funky, psychedelic colors that illuminate the stage, adding to the fun atmosphere.

In the central role of Dr. Funk is Black Ensemble veteran Dwight Neal – he gives a flawless performance; his timing, stage presence, and characterization are magnificent. Photos from Neal’s actual life are projected on screens in documenting the good “Doctor’s” creds, giving a nice personal touch to his portrayal. All the casts’ vocals are tight and the choreography innovative as they “Dance to the Music”, including masterful roller skating. Songs from back in the day, often with strong Chicago influences, have the audience on its feet as we travel back in time down memory lane.

I can’t say enough good things about the spectacular costumes – completely apropos and full of glamourous funk. The ensemble players break the fourth wall with ease, giving a party feel to the show, the songs infectious and superb. Jackie Taylor’s soulful and captivating Black Ensemble Theater celebrates fifty years of sublime entertainment, with this not to be missed production. “You Can’t Fake the Funk” is for mature audiences that like the finest in funky music, but the glitz and glamour fade to dark October 25th, so fly on over to www.blackensembletheater.org for tickets or more information.
