Ride The Lovely Merry-Go-Round With “Liliom”
By Wes Hessel with D’Arcy Mies
Based on the same story as “Carousel”, the first half of The Joffrey’s entrancing “Liliom” is set at an amusement park called Playland, the dancing woven through it, while Act Two is much more ethereal. The Balloon Man, a mime-like clown with a large bunch of balloons, is a recurring character both metaphorically and realistically. He is the guardian angel, with the various colors in his airborne bouquet dependent on the scene.
Various characters acquire balloons, some of the hues symbolic, representing emotions like love. The feel of the show is very European and cinematic, heavily metaphorical. The dance itself tells the story with the great artistry we have come to expect from this world class company. The elements that we associate with the Joffrey style of movement are clearly present – jetés and pas de deux are stellar. Simplistic sets and innovative use of lighting create some dazzling effects. A guest jazz band adds euphony to the classic musical theater score.
“Liliom” is a unique and well crafted ballet, but The Joffrey’s spectacular artistry only is on display until September 27th, so please float swiftly to www.joffrey.org for tickets or more information.
