Prince Nikolaos Photo Exhibit “Resilience” at Hellenic Museum

The National Hellenic Museum in Chicago is hosting the North American debut of the photography exposition by Greece’s HRH Prince Nikolaos.  A well-established taker of images, his work having been displayed since 2015 internationally, has chosen this set of pictures, collectively called “Resilience”, to illustrate the close relationship of his native nation with nature.  Depicting such elements as the seas, grapevines, and the iconic olive tree, the images presented are lensed through different forms of light, water, and perspective, giving new ways for known things to be seen and thought of.

Included is an immersive part of the show in a curtained off room where a projection, almost like a photo negative, of lit olive trees is displayed, accompanied by ambient sounds from Greece, such as birdsong. With the seating in the area, it is a most relaxing experience. This exhibition runs only until December 30th, so you will want to take advantage of this unique display during the holiday season.

Concurrent with this are two expositions of images taken by prodigious Chicago photographer Diane Alexander White. “Gather Together: Chicago Street Photography” shows a sample of the numerous pictures she has taken over decades at parades and other such social gatherings – focused on the 70’s and 80’s, the exposition zooms in on people in and around the events, capturing various moods and motifs.  Also running currently is “Storytelling in Cloth and Light”, which displays objects of textile construction woven, mostly by women, in their Hellenic homeland, and lovingly born to this country, alternated with photos by Ms. White from her trip to Greece in 1977. Watch for an in-depth article on Diane Alexander White and her work at the museum, including excerpts from an interview with the photographer herself, in the January People & Places.
