For its 20th anniversary season, Idle Muse Theatre Company is presenting Alexander Dumas’ novel “The Three Musketeers” as adapted by Robert Kauzlaric. It’s a fun-filled, fast-paced production directed by Evan Jackson, with very creative use of the intimate space at The Edge Off-Broadway Theater. There is male bonding, camaraderie, deception, and romance, swords flying intensely with choreographed accuracy, as well as hope and humor.

Troy Schaeflein is sensational as the country boy D’Artagnan, dreaming of joining the Musketeers under the mentorship of Treville, sharply played by Erik Schnitger (with a dual role as Lord de Winter). Jack Sharkey (Athos), Boomer Lusink (Porthos), and Xavier Lagunas (Aramis) are incredible in their characterizations of the title trio.

Jennifer Mohr’s Milady is magnificent in her cunning manipulation as a spy for the devious villain Cardinal Richelieu, played by Eric Duhon to perfection – I felt chills. I also am intrigued by Joel Thompson, who is captivating as the cold, mysterious Comte de Rochefort. Benjamin Jouras is amazing in his dual parts as the infantile/gullible King Louis the XIII and the arrogant Duke of Buckingham, who he suspects of having an affair with his wife, Queen Ann, splendidly  portrayed by Cary Gordon.

Jamie Redwood as Constance, confidante to the queen and D’Artagnan’s love interest, is stunning. Vanessa Copeland is very impressive in her various roles, as is Jane Felton (Bonacieux/swordsman) and Brendan Hutt as Laporte, as well as Sam Neal in the combat ensemble.

Evan Jackson’s functional, versatile, snug stage design feels huge for a cast of fourteen, horses included. Victoria Jablonski and Abby Evans’ period costumes are lavish, even with quick changes. This cohesive ensemble lives up to the Musketeer’s infamous motto, “All for one and one for all.” But the swordplay, drama, and mirth all come to an end April 25th, so proceed with haste to www.idlemuse.org for tickets or more information.
