“East Texas Hot Links” Burns with Truth
By Cate Rees-Hessel
“East Texas Hot Links”, the Pulitzer-nominated piece by Eugene Lee now playing at Court Theatre, is a riveting and serious drama, well executed, and fabulous. Moments of humor are effectively placed and appropriate. As we have come to expect of Court, the acting is sensational, each actor on the stage giving a believable and moving performance. The men delivering their all are Willie B., David Dowd, Juwan Lockett, Kelvin Roston Jr., A.C. Smith, Geno Walker, and Alfred H. Wilson. The lone female cast member, AnJi White, is one of the best actresses I have seen onstage; her heartfelt characterization is flawless and real.
This one act finishes on a highly dramatic, thought provoking, and somber note, the final scene brilliantly played out with raw intensity. Court Theatre’s set never disappoints with meticulous thought to detail and era, here designed deftly by Jack Magaw. A period pay phone and jukebox add nicely to the story line. Christine Pascual and Janice Pytel‘s costumes are expertly done, understated and period appropriate. The threads are all woven together brilliantly under the direction of the great master Ron OJ Parson. Overall, this play is a not-to-miss theatrical experience for mature audiences. You only have until September 29th to witness this stirring work; for tickets or more information, please go to www.courttheatre.org.
