Be a Part of “The Audience” at Drury Lane
By Cate Rees-Hessel
Drury Lane Theatre’s stellar production of “The Audience” is wholly fabulous. The set is elegant and charming, very realistic, with believable and well-placed props. An attractive on-stage screen facilitates some of the transformational costume changes by Her Majesty. Wigs are often switched to depict various eras, and there is never a hair out of place; the costumes and accessories are most lovely. My favorite ensembles are a glamorous white ball gown and glimmering tiara, as well as a black cocktail dress with a netted petticoat, and a stunning pink suit. Lighting design is exceptional, understated and illuminating.
The best part of this magnificent production is the exemplary acting. Janet Ulrich Brooks in the lead role of Queen Elizabeth gives a flawless performance. She is absolutely amazing, regal yet real. Her intimate portrayal shows us both the monarch and the woman. Ms. Brooks brings the royal to life with the ease that only a well-seasoned actress can accomplish.
The lovely Susie McMonagle as Margaret Thatcher is wonderful. Only onstage for a short time in the second act, she is completely memorable and spot on. Ron E. Rains plays Harold Wilson, the queen’s favorite Prime Minister; his poignant and masterful characterization of a gentleman eventually facing Alzheimer’s disease is riveting, honest, and moving. The entire cast including ensemble members are simply marvelous. Two very talented young ladies, Elin Joy Seiler and Omi Lichtenstein, portray young Elizabeth with grace beyond their years.
This magnificent dramatic work is very well written by Peter Morgan and Jessica Fisch expertly directs; it has heartwarming and humorous moments – I especially loved dialogues regarding a personalized barbeque from the Obamas, retrieving a book, and Woolworth’s. No review of the play would be complete without a mention of the adorable and well-behaved Corgi that enthralls the audience with a spunky cuteness. Don’t miss your opportunity to be part of ”The Audience”, though you only have until October 20th to see this insiders’ view.
