“Come From Away” to Paramount
By Cate Rees-Hessel
Paramount Theatre’s production of the heart-warming and inspiring musical “Come From Away” is absolutely fabulous. The set is charming: a giant size tree encompasses the stage, with projections showing a beautiful ocean view. Actual rain on the stage is calming and pleasant, cascading and puddling. We are reminded, “Be anxious for nothing” (Philippians 4:6). Everything about this play is peaceful, despite the chaos surrounding the story line.
This beautiful production showcases the kindness of a small town in Newfoundland that hosted plane passengers diverted due to the 9/11 attacks, opening their homes, sharing their Irish whiskey and finest videos. The town’s residents and various airline travelers are played by an amazing cast, dual roles handled with realistic ease, switching characters flawlessly. Music is fun, strong vocals and a great onstage band in the background. A Pepsi-drinking mayor, novice TV reporter, SPCA director, lead school teacher, air traffic controller, and an airport worker, amongst others, befriend a broad cross section of interesting plane passengers from around the globe, including a female pilot. They entertain the group and help ease their fears. Relationships build and emotions run high in this lovely theatrical work. There are moments of sadness, handled with sincerity and dignity, the comedy beautifully poignant.
A dear friend is a real-life member of the stranded who spent five days in Gander, along with her mom – she describes the citizens of this town and surrounding areas as angels. This production clearly and realistically portrays the friendly, caring townspeople. Paramount brings a diverse group of actors, each one enormously talented. This well-directed and beautifully written piece is not to be missed. It will touch your soul, while it entertains with drama and comedic moments. My husband and I are very encouraged that this show runs now through September 11th to October 12th. May we never forget that day – what a perfect remembrance.
