“True West” is True Theater at its Best
By Cate Rees-Hessel
Copley Theatre’s production of the Sam Shepherd Pulitzer finalist “True West” is serious drama at its finest. The acting is phenomenal – all four characters are realistic yet over the top; the mastercasting by Trent Stork brings a flawless ensemble. Many mentions of an unseen father add to the dramatic build of this compelling work. Sibling rivalry and family dysfunction is showcased in this heavy and emotional play. I left the theater very grateful for my beautiful and loving brothers and sisters. There are some comedic moments, especially involving multiple toasters and a bag of Wonder Bread to be toasted in a champagne and Jack Daniels fog. Nuances, symbolism, and raw emotions make for a dynamic night of dramatic excellence. This production is intense, with deep depth of characterizations.
I especially loved the set. The quintessential Formica table and vinyl chairs from days gone by, an avocado green stand mixer, a floral pot on the stove, macrame plant hangers, wood paneling in the hallway, and a chocolate brown trim line phone that is integral to the story line all grace the charming wallpapered set. Of course, an old-fashioned typewriter is front and center – screenwriters can’t live without this pivotal prop. Copley’s bold and beautiful theater series is not to be missed and this season has begun with a bang. This theatrical experience even includes specialty drinks at the bar, and a backdrop for photo opportunities. The sun will set in the “True West” August 31st, so please ride on out to www.paramountaurora.com/series/ for tickets or more information.
