“Fidelio” Keeping The Faith

| October 2, 2024

By Flo Mano with Wes Hessel

The only opera composed by the great Beethoven, “Fidelio” demonstrates the importance of being true to yourself and to those you care for. Last staged by Lyric 20 years ago, this production in a striking modern setting of a present day prison is an enduring story of oppression and justice through the power of love and courage. Conducted impeccably by Lyric Opera’s Maestro Enique Mazzola, nominated for Conductor of the Year for the 2024 International Opera Awards, and directed by Matthew Ozawa, the somber suppression feel of this apropos political drama speaks volumes in our current political climate.

Soprano Elza van den Heever is incredible in the role of Leonora, as the disguised youth Fidelio, in a quest to free her husband Florestan, apolitical prisoner. He is portrayed hauntingly by tenor Russell Thomas. The bass Dimitry Ivashenko is subtly vibrant as chief jailer Rocco. Baritone Brian Mulligan’s Don Pizarro, the vengeful governor of the prison, is convincing. Bass-baritone Alfred Walker is superb as the morally upstanding principals minister of state. And Sydney Mancasola, soprano, in her Lyric debut shows promise.

Internationally renowned set and projection designer Alexander V. Nichols’ work is brilliantly breathtaking. Lighting designer Yuki Nakase Link adds to it, illuminatingly compelling and potent. The run of “Fidelio”, however, is only through October 10th, so please proceed with haste to www.lyricopera.org for tickets or more information.
